TERM 1 VALUE:

Justice & Service

Dear Students, Parents and Carers,

As we come to the end of this week, our thoughts and prayers are especially with members of the Jewish community and all those directly affected by the tragic events yesterday. As a Catholic College, we stand united with people of all faiths and none, holding fast to our value of compassion. Moments such as these remind us of the strength found in community and the importance of nurturing hope and peace together.

This week we have continued to see the pride and determination of our students in so many ways. The launch of our Service Awards has seen 11 students and 1x member of staff nominated in the first week! It has been inspiring to watch students making full use of the Learning Resource Centre after hours, giving time and focus to their studies. We are pleased that the extended opening hours (Monday to Thursday until 5:30pm) are supporting our students’ learning, and we will continue to review this provision based on demand.

Looking ahead, a few important reminders:

  • Year 12 and Access to Level 3 Settling-In Reviews will take place on Wednesday 22nd October, with bookings opening shortly.
  • Year 13 Progress Reviews will follow on Thursday 23rd October.
    • Please remember that all students will be working from home on these days on work that is set by their teachers via Teams.
    • The first half term concludes at 4pm on Thursday 23rd October.
  • Ahead of this, you will shortly be able to see your young persons recent key assessment marks and grades as they begin to be added onto the Pro-Monitor markbooks (deadline for entry is 9th October).
  • A reminder also that students are not in college on Monday 6th October, in lieu of our Open Day tomorrow (Saturday 4th October).

Next week also brings opportunities to celebrate our community and diversity, with activities to mark both the World Day of Migrants and Refugees which is celebrated by the Catholic Church and the start of Black History Month. You can read more about these events and how students can get involved in the section below.

Together, these events remind us of the strength, richness, and pride that comes from celebrating our shared humanity, both within our college and beyond.

Wishing you a restful weekend.

Thought of the Week:

“Those who love peace must learn to organize as effectively as those who love war.” - Martin Luther King Jr. (celebrated for Black History Month)

Think about the resources and human effort that go into making war. It is overwhelming. But there is hope in how ordinary people, with few resources, can oppose death and destruction.

When people look back at the conflicts of today, what will have been your contribution? Towards peace, towards war or nothing at all?

EVENTS

Save the Date! Settling in Review- October 2025

As part of our commitment to parental/carer engagement, we are delighted to invite you to our Settling in Review event which will take place on Wednesday 22nd October 2025, 09:00 – 16:00

This event is open to all parents/carers of our Access to Level 3 and Year 12 students at our college. The purpose of the Settling in Review is to allow you to talk with subject teachers, progress tutors, and inclusive learning key workers (where applicable) to discuss how your young person is settling in and progressing at St Brendan’s Sixth Form College.

How will appointments run?
All appointments will take place virtually via our booking system, School Cloud. This system does not require your young persons teams page and you will be able to connect directly through your chosen email address.

How do I book an appointment?
Details on how to book appointments will be advised to you shortly, with the booking system going live on Monday 13th October at 18:00.

Even though these are virtual appointments, we encourage your young person to also attend where possible. Further details about this event and how to book appointments will follow shortly.

Please note that the College will be closed to all students on 22nd and 23rd October, however work will be set on the students Teams pages for them to complete. Half term begins on Friday 24th October.

Celebrating Community, Diversity and Enrichment

This weekend, the Catholic Church marks the World Day of Migrants and Refugees. To share in these celebrations and highlight the richness of our college community, our Chaplain, Marek, will be running an interactive activity on Tuesday. Students and staff will be invited to share and display their nationalities as part of this meaningful event.

We have also welcomed the start of Black History Month. Our Student Enrichment Teams and Student Union have been working hard to prepare a range of activities to mark the month, centred around the theme of “Standing Firm in Power and Pride.” The showcase will be a gallery celebrating Bristolian Black heroes, and students are encouraged to take part in our fact-finding treasure hunt, with the chance to win a special BHM Hamper!

Service in Action Awards Launched

This week we launched our new Service in Action Awards, celebrating one of our core values: Service. These awards recognise the incredible ways our students and staff give their time to help others and make a difference.

In our very first week we’ve already had 11 student nominations and 1 staff nomination, including young people raising money for their faith groups, leading local youth groups, and volunteering with charities.

Each term, we’ll be spotlighting winners in the bulletin to share and celebrate the heart of our college community.

POLICIES

📣Lost Property Reminder📣

We’ve accumulated a significant amount of lost property at reception, including coats, jewellery, and other items. If you’ve misplaced something recently, please stop by reception to check—your belongings may be waiting for you there.

⌚ Attendance Monitoring ⌚

Attendance is crucial for success, particularly during these initial weeks. For our Year 12, ATL3 and Year 13 students, please be aware that we will be closely monitoring attendance. Maintaining regular attendance is important, as it impacts your ability to remain enrolled on your courses. Should there be concerns about your attendance falling below our threshold during the first three weeks, it may affect your place at St Brendan’s.

We are here to support you through these transitions and ensure that your time at St Brendan's is both successful and enjoyable. Our staff, including teachers, progress tutors, inclusive learning team, careers team, mental health team and the senior team, are here to help with any concerns or queries that you may have.

💳 Cashless Campus 💳

St Brendan's is a cashless campus so please make sure you have a card and/or contactless payment on your phone.

🖨️ Print Credit 🖨️

If you need to purchase print credit you can do this on the College “Store” which you can access on our website or by using this link St Brendan's Sixth Form College Store

When prompted to login, click on the “Sign in with Microsoft” option, where you can use your College email and password. Your print credit account will automatically update after payment has been approved.

❗️ Lanyards ❗️

The College takes the safety of students and staff very seriously. Students should not invite friends who do not attend St Brendan’s onto the site and must wear their student lanyard and ID at all times on campus. (Students should obtain a temporary student lanyard from the main reception if they do not have their ID card with them.) Our campus personal , Frank and Blessing, patrol the site and can be approached if any student is concerned about their own safety or the safety of others.

🚘 Turning Right at the end of the day 🚘

A reminder to all students, parents and carers to please turn right only, when exiting the College between 15:50 – 16:20 at the end of the College day.

SUPPORT

⚠️We have been made aware that we have 2 separate cases of Shingles in college⚠️

Shingles is an infection that causes a painful rash and you should see your GP as soon as possible if you think you, or a member of your family, has it. If you are unable to see a GP, call 111 for advice about what to do. Shingles cannot be spread to other people, but anyone who has not had chickenpox before could catch chickenpox from someone with Shingles.

People at risk are:

  • Pregnant women who have not had chickenpox before .
  • People with a weakened immune system – like someone having chemotherapy or taking medication which may weaken your immune system.
  • Babies less than one month old – unless it is your own baby, as they should be protected from the virus by your immune system.
  • You are only infectious to others while the rash oozes fluid and you should stay off work or College until the rash scabs. Further information can be found on the NHS website: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/shingles/

If you need to report a student absence, please visit our website for detailed instructions on how to do so.

📖Welcome to the LRC 📖

It is lovely to see so many of you coming in the LRC to work! Everyone is welcome in the LRC, but we ask you to follow two simple rules while you are here:

  • Silent study only please! The LRC is a silent study space and only individual study is allowed. Chatting or hovering over computers to hang out with your friends is distracting for the students who need to focus. If you need to discuss your work with other students, please try B101 or an alternative location.
  • No food in the LRC please, drinks are allowed.
