TERM 1 VALUE:

Justice & Service

Dear Students, Parents and Carers,

This will be our final bulletin before the half term break, which begins on Friday 24th October.

This week we have been celebrating the outstanding achievements of our students who represented St Brendan’s at the Bristol Education Partnership Youth Talks Final, delivering talks that both inspired and moved a wider audience across Bristol. They are a real credit to our College — confident, articulate, and thoughtful ambassadors of our community and fantastic orators. Our Student Union has been brilliant in leading activities to celebrate Black History Month, fostering awareness and discussion across the College. At the same time, our Chaplaincy team has raised the profile of Refugee Week, helping us reflect on themes of welcome, justice, and compassion. Our lunchtime sports sessions continue to bring our community together, encouraging students to keep active and connected. Alongside this, the range of enrichment opportunities taking place, both within the curriculum and beyond, demonstrates the breadth of what St Brendan’s offers, and the enthusiasm with which our students engage in all aspects of College life.

Some of our Year 13 students have now submitted their early UCAS applications for some of the most competitive university courses. We are incredibly proud of their hard work, ambition, and the resilience they have shown in reaching this important milestone. We cannot wait to hear on the offers that you will receive, we know that many of you have already received some which of course opens the door to choice.

Before half term, we will be holding our Settling-In Review Days for Access to Level 3 and Year 12 (Weds 22nd) and Progress Review Day for Year 13 students (Thurs 23rd). On these days, all students will work remotely and complete set assignments. These review meetings are a valuable opportunity for parents and carers to receive feedback and explore how best to support your young person in achieving their goals for the year ahead. We know that some students wish to come and use the LRC for some or all of these days and they are welcome to do so, though they must register their intent to use this space via the form found later in this bulletin.

The new term will begin on Monday 3rd November. Our first GCSE English exam will take place on Tuesday 4th November, followed by GCSE Maths paper 1 on Wednesday 5th November. We wish every student sitting these exams the very best of luck — we know many of you will be revising over the break, but we also hope you take time to rest and recharge.

Wishing all our students, parents and carers a peaceful and enjoyable half term break.

Thought of the Week:

"There was a widow in a city who kept coming to the city judge saying, “Give me justice against my adversary.” For a while he refused.” – Luke 18:3-4

Standing up for justice means supporting those who are marginalised. Reflect on how you can use your voice to uplift others. How can you be an ambassador for justice today?"

LRC Access for Students on Remote Study Days – 22nd & 23rd October

Need a quiet space or access to a computer for remote study days?

If you know you’ll struggle to get work done at home—whether it’s because you don’t have a working laptop/PC, a quiet study space, or just find it hard to stay focused—you can book a space in the LRC at college on Weds 22nd and Thurs 23rd October.

These are remote study days while parent/carer meetings are taking place, so all work will be set on Teams. The LRC will be open and supervised for students who need:

✅ A quiet, focused environment
✅ Support staying on track

Sign-up closes at 4pm on Monday 20th October so we can confirm arrangements with Finance and the LRC team.

🚍 Please note: SB buses will not be running on these days. Students will need to make their own way in using public transport or other means.

For students with Free School Meals you will be provided a grab bag from the café

Spaces are limited, so sign up early if you know you’ll benefit from being in college.

Bristol Education Partnership (BEP) 48 Hour Podcast Challenge!

The Schools 48 Hour Podcast Challenge is a unique challenge that's more than just a race against the clock. It's a powerful opportunity to ignite creative thinking and fully explore the power of words in a modern, engaging format. It is exclusive to just students from BEP schools.

The Challenge Details
Students will be challenged to conceive, script, record, and edit their very own podcast in just 48 hours over a single weekend. This compressed time frame is the perfect crucible to test and refine essential communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills in a dynamic, real-world experience.

We know safety and supervision are key. Please note that while the creative process happens over the weekend, all participating student teams must be supervised by a parent or guardian throughout the challenge period.

Inspiring Oracy and Language Skills

Imagine the learning that will happen as students:

  • Harness the power of your voice to tell compelling stories.
  • Collaboratively craft complex narratives under pressure.
  • Develop sophisticated arguments and persuasive language for an authentic audience.

This challenge provides an unparalleled platform for students to take ownership of their learning and see their oracy and communication skills transform into a tangible, shareable product.

How it works
The challenge begins at 4:30pm, Friday 21st November and stops at 4:30pm, Sunday, 23rd November. When the clock starts, the challengers will be issued with the three elements that must be worked into their 10 -15 minute podcast entry.

Any tech can be used, smart phones, tablets, portable recorders along with any free audio software.

Students and teachers (who are recommending students) can register their interest using this link: https://schoolspodcastchallengeuk.my.canva.site/

BEP will then direct all interested teams to the final registration page with full details.

We fully encourage interested students to sign up and take part, we will be following your progress 🙂
