TERM 5 VALUE:
Dignity
Dear Students, Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to all our students, parents and carers as we begin Term 5.
This is an important term for the college community, with a strong focus on both transition and examinations. For many of our students, this is a key point in the academic year as they prepare for the next stage of their journey, whether that is progression into Year 13, university, a higher apprenticeship or other positive destinations.
For our Year 12 students, end of year examinations are an important part of the transition into Year 13. These assessments will help students to demonstrate what they have learned so far, identify any areas for further development, and prepare well for the demands of their final year. This is also a significant time for those beginning to think seriously about applications to university and higher-level apprenticeships, and we encourage students to make the most of the support and guidance available to them during the next two terms.
We know that exam season can feel challenging at times. It is completely normal for students to feel pressure or anxiety during this period. We want all students to know that support is available here at college. This support comes from our Wellbeing Team, Chaplaincy team and Progress Tutors, all of whom are here to help students manage this busy time and feel supported both academically and personally. To all of our students preparing for internal or external examinations: we know you can do this. Stay focused, work steadily, ask for help when you need it, and believe in the progress you have made. This is your opportunity to show what you know and what you can achieve.
This term we will also come together as a college community to celebrate diverse cultural mix.
Our Culture Week (taking place 5-8th May) this year provides a full week of activities to suit all students and staff interests culminated in our much loved Culture day Parade on Friday 8th. This event is always a vibrant and joyful occasion which highlights the rich diversity within our college community through music, fashion and food from around the world. The week is entirely planned and delivered by our Student Union and Culture Week Committee (comprised our our Interfaith group members, staff and students who have volunteerd to co-lead this event). Their commitment and leadership help to create an inclusive and celebratory experience for all. Culture Week is an important part of the college’s ongoing commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
At St Brendan’s, we are passionate about ensuring that every student thrives.
We are proud to be a community that welcomes diversity, embraces difference and values the contribution that each individual makes to college life.
More updates to come next week.
Kind regards
Marian Curran
Principal
"As a mother would protect her only child... so with a boundless heart should one cherish all living beings"
- Metta Sutta, verse 7 (Buddhism) - This week we celebrate World Mother Earth Day, which reminds us that we all share a common home. This includes sharing the responsibility for creation. Let’s reflect on how caring for the Earth is an act of respect for all people. With a selfless and loving heart, what can you do to take care of creation where you are?
The Chapel is open every day for quiet reflection.
You can find the Chaplaincy team in room B209, all faiths & no faiths are welcome!
There are lots of enrichment activities that you can get involved in via the Chaplaincy, click the button below to find out more.
This week we are proud to recognise Luka for his outstanding commitment to service and community this term.
Over the weekend of 18–19 April, Luka took part in a 24‑hour rowing challenge to raise funds for his uncle, Scott Blankley, and his family following a serious, life‑threatening accident. Luka joined a team of 15 family members and friends who set themselves the ambitious challenge of rowing one million metres in 24 hours - a target they exceeded, completing an impressive 1.6 million metres.
The event was held at Old Redcliffians Rugby Club in Brislington, a venue with strong personal significance to the family. Luka rowed eight one‑hour sessions across the full 24 hours, including through the night, and completed the final hour of the entire challenge, contributing a remarkable 120 kilometres himself.
This challenge also holds special meaning for our college community. Scott Blankley and his partner, Joanne Riches, are both former students, as is Scott’s brother Kai Blankley, who helped bring the rowing team together and has been by Scott’s side throughout his recovery.
Luka’s determination, resilience and willingness to give his time and energy in support of others exemplify the spirit of service we celebrate within our college community. We commend him for this extraordinary effort and the impact it has made for his wider family.
If you would like to read more about Scott's accident and what this challenge meant to those involved, the story is here.

As we move further into the academic year, attendance for Year 12 students is now more important than ever.
One of the conditions of auto‑progression into Year 13 is a minimum attendance of 85%, with our college target set at 92%. Falling below this threshold may have implications for progression and future course decisions.
This term is also a crucial period for:
Lessons missed at this stage cannot be easily recovered, and persistent absence risks students falling behind at a critical point in their studies.
Where we are aware of genuine and known barriers to attendance — such as health needs, caring responsibilities or other agreed personal circumstances — these are, of course, taken into account, and students are supported in line with their individual needs. We strongly encourage students experiencing difficulties with attendance to communicate with their tutor or Progress Team so that appropriate support can be put in place early.
We ask all students and families to continue prioritising excellent attendance and punctuality wherever possible so that learning, progress and future opportunities are not compromised.
Access To Level 3 Sport student Riley has been selected for the England Gymnastics squad for the second year running – an outstanding achievement.
At the British Championships, Riley finished an incredible 5th in the country on the rings, competing against the very best.
This success is especially meaningful following a period away from training and the recent loss of his godfather. Riley’s resilience, determination and commitment have been nothing short of inspiring.
We are extremely proud of him and look forward to seeing what he achieves next.
As part of mental health week (11th-15th of May) we are hosting a 5-a-side football tournament. Each player on the winning team will win an Amazon voucher.

With the welcome return of the sunshine and warmer weather, we would like to take this opportunity to remind students and families of the college’s expectations regarding smoking and vaping.
We strongly encourage all students to reflect on smoking or vaping as a habit and to consider their health and wellbeing. However, we also want to be absolutely clear about what is and is not permitted on site:
Any student found smoking or vaping outside of these agreed areas will receive an immediate two‑day suspension, in line with college behaviour expectations.
Thank you for supporting us in maintaining a safe, respectful and healthy environment for everyone.
The College takes the safety of students and staff very seriously. Students should not invite friends who do not attend St Brendan’s onto the site and must wear their student lanyard and ID at all times on campus. (Students should obtain a temporary student lanyard from the main reception if they do not have their ID card with them.) Our campus personal patrol the site and can be approached if any student is concerned about their own safety or the safety of others.
St Brendan's is a cashless campus so please make sure you have a card and/or contactless payment on your phone.
